Q

What did the Book of Common Prayer do?

A

In 1549, the Book of Common Prayer was anxious to avoid an increase in religious tension. It established a single form of services within the CofE and translated these into England. An English Bible was to be held by every Parish Church. It included an ambiguous Eucharist declaration which implied acceptance of transubstantiation.

Q

What did the Second Book of Prayer do?

A

This removed all traces of Catholicism, including transubstantiation. It banned the use of ‘popish’ vestments and removed Prayers for the Dead. Altars were replaced by communion tables. The removal of remaining ‘conservative’ ceremonies meant Catholics could no longer accept the Prayer Book.

Q

What did Pole’s legatine synod of 1555 and 1556 state?

A

Bishops were to reside in their dioceses, preach, and oversee the religious life of their parishes. However, the success of these depended largely on commitment at parish level. This was more difficult further South- there were few candidates for ordination in Kent.
