Reliability + Sensitivity Flashcards
What does reliability mean?
consistency
What are the 2 main types of reliability?
internal
external
what is internal reliability?
extent a measure is consistent within itself
How do you test for internal reliability?
using split half method
split questionnaire in half and conduct correlation between the two halves
What is another method to test internal reliability?
Cronbach’s alpha
higher the alpha the more reliable the questionnaire
What is the issue with split half method?
correlation might just be down to chance
What is Cronbach’s alpha?
a test that splits items equally in every way possible
What is external reliability?
extent to which a measure varies from one to another
How can you test external reliability?
test-retest
What is test retest?
where ppts assigned a test
then assigned same test a few weeks/ months after
correlation conducted between the two
What is inter-rater reliability?
degree to which different rater give consistent estimates of same behaviour
How could you improve reliability in general?
by increasing sample size
improve qualities of items
include control conditions
What is Sensitivity?
power
ability to detect small effects of the IV on the DV
What 3 factors are included in sensitivity?
large sample size
sizeable effects
control of unwanted variability
What is ceiling effect?
occurs when large portion of ppts in study score near the highest possible score
What is floor effect?
clustering of individuals responses around a certain point
