Relativism Flashcards
“Accept me the way I am”
Will you accept me the way I am, holding to a moral viewpoint that is opposite of yours and that says your way of life is immoral?
“You’re wrong for not attending my same-sex wedding, etc.”
Would you be willing to become complicit in something you believe is wrong, such as accompany me to a seminar which taught that your way of life was immoral and wrong in every way?
Where is evidence for moral realism found in the Bible?
Deuteronomy 30:11—“This command…is not too hard for you…”
List five reasons why relativism is not persuasive
1) cultural values usually only differ in their factual bases;
2) even if they don’t, lack of consensus doesn’t mean there is no right answer;
3) if morals are relative to culture, then Hitler was not morally bad;
4) cannot explain why tolerance is a virtue;
5) relativism can be judgmental
Who said, “One who claims to be a skeptic of one set of beliefs is actually a true believer in another set of beliefs”?
Phillip E. Johnson, author of Darwin on Trial and Reason in the Balance
How do we know that moral values are practically undeniable?
Because anyone who says otherwise values their right to declare that moral values don’t exist
What is the best way to get a moral relativist to admit the existence of moral absolutes?
Treat them unfairly
“History can’t be known because we don’t have access to all the facts”
In that case scientists can’t know anything either since they don’t have access to all the facts
What other field is compromised if history is unknowable?
Forensic science and courts
If history is unknowable, what does that mean for skeptics regarding Christianity and evolution?
They cannot say Christianity is false and evolution is true because those are historical events
If the skeptic admits history is knowable…
then he must deal with the multiple lines of evidence for Christianity and creation
“Converted people are not objective”
The important question is whether they are presenting objective facts and not leaving out important facts that may disagree with their views
“What would Jesus do?”
Jesus was never a father; does that mean we shouldn’t have kids?
According to Michael J. Kruger, what is the first commandment of progressive Christianity?
Jesus is more a model for living than an object of worship
Ten Commandments, ch. 1
True or false: progressive Christianity rejects the doctrine that Christ died to save sinners from their sin?
True
(Kruger, Ten Commandments,
ch. 2)
