Why do some Christians think that marriage is better than living together?
> make a permanent commitment-assures them of your enduring love and loyalty
better for the children
the teaching of Jesus says so
Why do some liberal Christians think living together is acceptable before marriage?
> find out how they’re really like
can leave more easily if you fall out of love
some commitment but not permanent
Roman Catholic’s view on divorce
> doesn’t allow divorce even for adultery because they believe marriage is a sacrament-once they’ve received the sacrament of marriage it can never end in God’s eyes unless they die
allows annulment for specific reasons eg if one person didn’t have the intention to remain faithful, have a child, have a sexual relationship or stay married until the other one dies
Roman Catholic re-marrying
> if the partner is still alive, they can’t remarry
not allowed to take communion because they’re committing adultery-in God’s eyes they’re still married to the first spouse
Protestants re-marrying
> allow divorced people to remarry in church but want to talk things through with the couple
Liberal Christians divorcing
> accept a divorce as the lesser of two evils eg if staying causes more harm than divorcing eg domestic violence then Jesus said to show love to each other-so most loving thing to do in the situation
Protestants divorcing
> believe that Jesus’ teaching on marriage and divorce in the New testament is what we should aspire for
but accept that sometimes humans fall short of this ideal because we live in a fallen world where we have rejected God
Church of England remarrying
> vicars can decide if they’re prepared to remarry the couple
some will allow it if there’s no prospect of reconciliation and more loving for kids and couple if divorced
