Relationships Flashcards
What’s sexual selection?
Human reproductive behaviour definition?
Why are some characteristics more advantageous than others?
Explains our partner preferences are due to evolution. Behaviours or characteristics that increase reproductive success are passed on too future generations and then may be exaggerated.
Any behaviours linking to chances to reproduce such increases the chance of our genes surviving. Includes evolutionary mechanics which explain our partner preferences like mate choice and mate competition.
Some characteristics are advantageous as they attract potential mates also some provide advantages over competitors for reproductive rights eg. Height and certain facial and bodily features.
Anisogamy
What does anisogamy suggest about males males optimum reproductive strategy?
What’s inter- sexual selection?
What’s intra
Refers to differences between males and females sex cells (their ganetes) eg. Male gametes = very small and mobile where as female gametes are relatively large and generally are static.
Anisogamy suggests males should try and mate with as many females as possible as minimal energy required to produce sperm.
Selection between the sexes eg. Strategies males use too select females or vice versa
Intra- sexual selection is where selection occurs within a sex eg . Strategies between males to be the one selected
Who’s more choosy in inter- sexual selection.
What happens if a female has a preference for a certain characteristic.
Both males and females are choosy as neither want too produce offspring with a sub- standard partner however females are more choosy as the consequences are harsher for them. Females generally look for quality over quantity and there ova are far rarer than sperm and require more energy to produce them.
Eg. If female finds height an attractive characteristic she’ll look for a taller mate then a taller male is more likely to mate with her so over time this advantageous allele (gene/ characteristic ) will become more frequent in the population eg. Sexy sons hypothesis.
Which is preferred strategy of males for sexual selection?
What does intra - sexual selection relate to
Are larger males and larger females considered more attractive?
Intra- sexual selection has what kind of consequences?
Intra- sexual selection so therefore different from the females preference. Males therefore prefer quantity over quality.
Intra refers to competition between males to mate with a female. Successful mates reproduce and pass on traits.
Larger males have a reproductive advantage however females don’t compete for reproductive rights so not advantage too larger females
