Relationships Flashcards
What is emotional distancing?
Infants died a lot more so parents in ancient Rome and Greece grown more numb to their deaths. However it is not to say that they did not feel for their deaths.
Factors that lead to the separation of the parents from the child may have led to emotional distancing from a parent and their child
How was the general relationship with the child and parent?
Parents may not have spent too much time with their child. Father had to work to provide for family. If they were at war, they would be gone for potential years. Thus fathers were not available for their child. However this does not mean fathers did not care or show affection to their children as this was very present when they were available
How were parents absent from the childs life?
Mortality rates of the parents were very high.
Mothers may have died from pregnancies
Fathers were more likely to die as they were typically older than the mother by a couple decades
Both or one parent may would have died from other causes due to of medical tech
Fathers had to work or go to war
Divorces may have happened. Children went with their fathers typically but it was possible for them to go to their mothers. But the children could see both parents
What form of connection did parents share with their children?
An emotional connection, Despite being numb to children’s death, parents felt emotional connections to their offspring especially if they grown. Such example is seen with how not all parents followed the mourning law.
While legally, children were not allowed to be mourned for long (children over 10 can be mourned for 1 year, children from 3 months and under cannot be mourned, children being mourned for the months that correspond to the years they have been alive for 8 months mac), parents still mourned for their child for a longer period of time
What does the sentiment “think of the children” have to do with Athenian trials?
In these trials, many people in the Athenian court used this sentiment.
What was the relationship between nature vs nurture and parenting?
It was thought that bad parents would make bad children. Parents would be punished for their child’s wrongdoings as they would have taught them wrong
What does Juvenal say on bad parenting?
Children will pick up from their parents bad habits. I.e if a parent gambles, the child will gamble. Children will pick up these habits from viewing their parents habits and being influenced to do it
What do children say about their relationship with their parents?
We have no child voices on their say with their parents .No evidence for them to say as all sources came from adults. However it seems highly likely that children felt strong love for their parents
What does the term “pietas” have to do with a child and their relationship to their parents?
Just like how mankind have respect and devotion to the gods, this word was used to describe the relationship between a child and the father
Children were expected to show great admiration, respect and gratitude to their father and mother
What was some sources of tension between the parents and their children? What was a benefit for the parents for having children in the long term?
Children are very expensive to take care of. Moreover, Finances and money are a large source of tension with children that may take the money and recklessly spend it. However, a benefit is that children will take care of the parents once they grow up
What did Aristotle say on the relationship between brothers?
Relationship between brother is like a relationship between two warriors (analogy)/ Military image is used to describe a brotherly bond instead of the modern day were the family image is used to described a military image.
This is because so many men and boys are engaged in the military during the ancient times. May also be because the ancients realized that two comrades in war are closer than two siblings like how people tend to be closer with their friends than with their own siblings
What was the relationship between a brother and sister like?
Gender divide when kids grew up later as they went on different paths. While there is no evidence of this,
one sibling or the other may have wanted to follow the other but could not cuz of gender boundaries (sister wanting to go to school with her brother when education was only for boys)
What was the relationship like between a child and their grandparent?
Grandparents are very involved in the children’s life. Grandmothers were closer to children as they were much younger and closer in age than the grandfather (remember, girls get married and have kids in their mid to late teens and boys tended to marry much later in age with a decade or 2 age gap not being uncommon)
What does Fronto’s letter say about the relationship between a grandfather and his grandson.
Grandfathers’ relationship with their grandson. The letter shows great affection that the grandfather feels towards his grandson. Grandfathers or parents may have taken a big role in raising infants than the father.
Once his grandson passed away, the grandfather wrote a letter to the empire where the death of his grandchild causes him great agony, misery and reflection on his life and loss
What was the children’s relationship like with their peers (other children)?
Children associate with other children. Going to school creates bonds between children. It was very encouraged for children to create bonds with other kids so they could experience good and bad things together. This will allow them to grow.
Child slaves also made friends with other slave children, the master children, and children within the public sphere
