Q

In terms of citizenship, how did the ancients view children?

A

Some children were not enrolled as citizens as they were deemed too young. Thus, they had no role to play as a citizen as they didn’t financially contribute to the house and they existed entirely in the private and familial sphere.

Rather than being actual citizens, the ancient world viewed children as citizens in training. Such is seen

Q

Were children marginalized in terms of rights?

If rights were in place was it truly to protect the child?

A

Children had little rights and protection in the public sphere . No child labour laws or any laws available singled out children as a specific audience or group needing special legal protection .

However, in Dillon and Garland, 3.13, laws did exist to protect children from sex trafficking. This is because parents sell their sons into sex slavery; the parent robs the son of his political speech, an important tool in the political domain. In Athens, a boy that is sold as a prostitute can no longer become a citizen and express or contribute to society.

While this laws seems to protect the child, it is more likely to exist to protect the state . The more children that were sold off, the fewer participants there would be in the democratic process (kids being citizens in training)

Q

Is marginalization the correct term for children being citizens in training?

A

For the ancients, they did view this as discriminating against the child. Instead, they viewed the child as citizens in training because they were not viewed as capable as adults being citizens. Thus, children were raised to be capable citizens if they were not enslaved.

The passage Demosthenes 59.18-19 reinforces this concept. aIn this passage, amother sold a girl to prostitution, and it was condemned not to protect the child but to protect society, kids were viewed as citizens in training

Q

How is child labour linked to the marginalization of children? Did the ancients consider this marginalization?

A

In our contemporary world, child labour is considered taboo. The younger a child is, the more unacceptable it is for children to be at work. In other words, we view it as marginalization. However, the ancients did not view this as marginalization.

Through child labour, children from. lower-economic classes became heavily involved in the public domain as they had to earn their right to stay at home by contributing to the household.

Q

What is informal and formal child labour?

A

Informal is typically chores that contribute to the family economy or is unpaid work. Children look after the house while the parents leave and earn money. Such examples of informal work is girls performing domestic duties and learning them. For boys they typically did fieldwork but it was not uncommon for girls to help their brothers or fathers with farm work

Formal work is being paid. Children may have also been paid for performing agricultural work.
Children worked in an apprenticeship
Parents would send children to be mentored by workers and earn money (less than adults and only if they were free).

Slave children would go to learn the craft and earn money for their masters.

Q

How can child slavery be associated with marginalization?

A

Yes it can. Unlike children who are considered citizens in training, child slaves will never be considered citizens. Thus, their rights are permanently taken away unless they are freed. In other words, they are at the whim of their employer.

Q

From the perspective of the ancient Romans and Greeks, how can child slavery not be considered marginalization?

A

In their perspectives, it will not be considered marginalization as to them, child slaves have no rights and can never be citizens. Thus if they are doing work, it was viewed as if they are simply an extension of their master will. Thus, they can not be marginalized.
