Relationship Breakdown Evaluation Flashcards
How does Duck’s theory oversimplify relationship breakdown?
The stages aren’t generalisable as it doesn’t account for drastic events such as cheating that will result in the phases of relationship breakdown being skipped
- not all relationships break up in phases
. The model may only be applicable to serious long-term relationship as short-term relationships won’t have built up commitment, so these phases won’t be necessary and breakdown can happen much sooner
How was the oversimplification of grave dressing acknowledged?
2006 - Rollie and Duck added the resurrection stage
What does the resurrection stage say?
. People don’t just grave-dress their breakup, but you also create a ‘new you’ without your partner
. Previous experiences from relationships can be taken into consideration to improve next ones
. Taking a positive look to future relationships
. Moved on from person you were to a new version of yourself
This stage is about personal growth
Who does the resurrection stage mainly apply to and how is it limited?
The person who wanted to end the relationship, the other person may want to just take a break from any relationships
The resurrection stage is limited in the fact that it assumes people move on very quickly
