What was the methodology?
The study was a laboratory experiment
What was the aim of the study?
To analyse the conditions that lead individuals to: identify with their group, accept or challenge inter group inequalities.
What was the first independent variable?
Day 3, Ps were told that the group boundaries were permeable (due to guards being selected by their reliability, trustworthiness…).
What was the second independent variable?
Day 5, a trade unionist was introduced. Hoped he would organise the group to achieve more equality.
What was the third independent variable?
Day 6, Ps were informed that observations had revealed that there is now difference in quality between the prisoners and guards.
What was the first dependant variable and how was it measured?
Social variables: social identification, awareness of alternative plans of action. Measured by observation. Whole prison had multiply cameras installed to watch the Ps
What was the second dependant variable and how was it measured?
Organisational variables: compliance with rules. Measured by doing daily psychometric tests.
What was the third dependant variable and how was it measured?
Clinical variables: self-efficacy, depression, stress hormones. Measured by daily swabs of saliva.
What was the sample?
Male participants were recruited through leaflets and advertisements in the national press. Initial pool was 332, which was reduced to 15 through screening.
What were the 3 phases of screening?
1 psychometric tests that measure both social variables and clinical variables. 2 a full weekend assessment by clinical psychologists. 3 medical and character references were obtained, police checks
How did the prisoners behave?
At first - compliant and hardworking. Then became uncooperative with guards. As the study progressed, they became more positive and empowered.
How did the guards behave!
Some were troubled by their power. They disagree with their colleagues and never had a shared identity. As the study progressed their administration became weaker.
