- Independent Medical Specialty => Patient-Relationship Management
- Concerned with promoting physical + cognitive functioning, activities + modifying personal / environmental Fs
- Responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment + rehab of px with disabling conditions / co-morbidities, across all ages
What’s the AIM of Rehabilitation?
- Solve the problems of the patient
- Thru biological, psychological + social aspect
What are the OBJECTS of Rehab?
- With AVOIDABLE Disability / General Disability
- Congenital / Acquired Disability, BEFORE Aged 16 w/ Mental Retardation
- With Diff Pathologies, and their impact on function / participation

What is MEDICAL REHAB?
- Restoring the biological health of human body
- Using all kinds of PRM interventions = Such as drugs, surgery, Speech Therapy + Physical Agents
What are the PHASES of MEDICAL REHAB?
1) ACUTE PHASE
- Acute Rehab uses the PLASTICITY of the body as early as possible + prevent complications
2) SUBACUTE PHASE
- Rehab Dept / Hospital
3) CHRONIC PHASE
- Long-term Rehab in Long-Term Facilities; Community Based
What is SOCIAL REHAB?
- Helping the patient socialise + be re-integrated back into society
What is PROFESSIONAL REHAB?
- Educating the Px to perform their OWN profession / acquire qualifications for a NEW Profession
- AFTER assessing / evaluating the health condition / disability
What is the REHAB TEAM?
- Team of Healthcare professionals that work close together in a multi-professional team
- Delivering rehab in an organised / goal-oriented + patient-centred manner
- Includes Orthopaedic Surgeons / Neurologist / Paediatrician / Nurse / Physiotherapist / Occupational Therapist
What is REHAB POTENTIAL?
-Rehab Potential = Patient’s Potential to achieve goals set by PRM
CLASSIFICATION
1) FAIR = Px is ABLE to follow plan
2) GUARDED = DOUBT in Px’s Potential
3) POOR = Patient is UNABLE to achieve goals

- Financially
What are the REASONS for Disability / Functional Impairment?
- Poor Posture
- Improper Gait
- Weak Grip / Arthritis

What are the ISSUES on REHAB for DISABLED People?
- PRM Progress is PROLONGED, hence LONG-TERM Rehab is required
- LTD N.O of Treatments available, DUE to CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Disabled Px MAY NEVER achieve goals, unlike healthy px
- Difficulty of Disabled Px to be MOTIVATED to Therapy
- Difficulty UNDERSTANDING the Therapy = Cognitive Disorder / Poor Communication Skills
