Rehab & ruminants Flashcards
What is used to measure range-of-motion?
Goniometer
When is cryotherapy indicated?
What are the benefits of cryotherapy?
During acute phase of tissue injury (incl. post op) - after exercise during rehab
Reduced blood flow, cellular metabolism & permeability, decreased nerve condition velocity, analgesia, prevention or reduction of edema, decreased muscle spasm
How is cryotherapy done?
Applied for 15-25 min with close monitoring of skin to avoid tissue damage
3-6 x/day
Avoid white, shiny skin - indication of frost bite
Use of ice packs, cold-compression units, cold immersion, ice massage (“ice Popsicles” applied parallel to muscle fibers for 5-10 min)
When is heat therapy indicated?
AFTER acute inflammatory phase of healing has resolved
What is the effect of heat therapy?
-> VD, accelerated enzymatic & metabolic runs, increased O2 uptake - may accelerate superficial tissue healing
How is heat therapy done?
Heat - usually 30-45 min for tx, applied with a heat pack & wrap
Be careful not to burn
Why do you need to be careful in using Xylazine in ruminants (esp. Which ones?)
What alpha 2 would you need to consider using?
Xylazine produces uterine contraction-oxytocin effect (possible abortion in last trimester in bovine and sheep. (Not equine)
-Detomidine - is not abortifacients in bovine (more alpha 2 specificity in detomidine than Xylazine)
