What is a GSL medicine and when and where can it be sold?
GSL - ‘general sales list’
- requires presence of RP
- available as self-selection
- sold in supermarkets or places closed to public
What are P medicines and when and where can they be sold?
P - Pharmacy medicines
- can only be sold under pharmacist supervision
- must not be accessible as self-selection
- discussion with pharmacist
What is a POM and requirements for sale?
POM - prescription only medicines
- can only be sold with prescription
- RP must be present
- more prone to misuse
What is the classification of paracetamol and aspirin under certain conditions?
16 tablets - GSL
32 tablets - P
>100 tablets - POMs
no limit to effervesence tablets
Why do we reclassify medicines?
- maximise timely access to effective treatment whilst minimising risk
What are the pros and cons of increasing availability of medicines OTC?
+ quick relief
+ rapid access
+ individual self-care
- risk of misuse
- risk of misdiagnoses -> delay treatment
What are some signs of misuse?
- lack of symptoms
- eager for specific medicine
- impatient or aggressive
- request large amaounts
- rehersed answers
- make frequent requests
How is psuedoephedrine and ephedrine subject to misuse?
- can manufacture crystal meth
- unlawful to sell both at the same time
limit to supply
What common OTC drug is subject to misuse and is addictive, and because of this what is advised?
- codiene and dihydrocodiene
advised to only sell one pack at a time
What is the max supply of ephedrine and psuedoephedrine?
- 720mg pseudoephedrine
- 180mg ephedrine
