What does the bar council do?
Representative body for barristers
Has it’s own ethical enquiries service
What does the BSB do?
Regulatory body for the bar
Sets requirements for training, education, CPD
Monitors service provided by barristers
Handles complaints regarding breach of handbook
Can investigate and impose sanctions
What does the legal ombudsman do?
Deals with complaints about barristers from clients
Only clients can complain to them
Doesn’t deal with professional misconduct
What is the BSB handbook?
Handbook of all the rules a barrister should follow (Code of conduct).
Applies to: Registered barristers, unregistered barristers and pupil barristers.
What is the professional statement?
Document that outlines all knowledge, skill and attributes that ALL barristers will have on day one of practice (End of pupillage)
