Anatomic Position
Individual is standing with arms at side and palms facing out
Plane
An imaginary flat surface that slices the body into specific sections
Three major anatomical planes
- Coronal
- Transverse
- midsagittal
Coronal plane (frontal plane)
a vertical plane that divides the body or organ into anterior (front) and posterior (back) pieces
Transverse plane (horizontal plane)
divides the body or organs into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) parts
Midsagittal plane
a vertical plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves
Sagittal Plane
parallel to midsagittal, this plane divides the structure into left and right parts that are not equal
Oblique Planes
Pass through structures at an angle
Anterior direction
In front of
Posterior direction
in the back of
Proximal direction
closer to the trunk
Distal direction
farther from the trunk
Dorsal
Toward the backside of the body
Ventral
toward the belly side of the body
Superior
Closer to the head
