Regions of Plura Flashcards
Mesothelium
Mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium) which lines the inner wall of the thoracic cavity (parietal pleura) and the outer surface of the lung (visceral pleura)
Between the two is the pleural cavity
Pleura is a
Pleura is a serous membrane - cells secrete a serous fluid which acts as a lubricant so the two layers can slide against one another
a. Parietal pleura
Costal, Diaphragmatic, Cervical, Mediastinal pleura
i. Costal pleura
part of the pleura that lines the inner surface of the rib cage
ii. Diaphragmatic pleura
ii. Diaphragmatic pleura
iii. Cervical pleura:
covers upper part of thoracic cavity; dome shape; just above the apex of the lung
iv. Mediastinal pleura
anything between the two lungs; covers midline structures
b. Visceral pleura
covers the surface of the lungs and lines the fissures of the lungs
c. Pleural reflections
where pleura reflects from one surface onto another
i. Costamediastinal, costodiphragmatic, pulmonary ligament
d. Recesses:
costadiaphragmatic, costomediastinal
i. **lung moves into these recesses only during DEEP inspiration
