What is the European Union?
a collection of 27 European nation-states with both intergovernmental and supranational institutions
What is the European Union designed to do?
promote cooperation around its shared values, aims and agreements
What is regionalism?
a group of countries in a given geographic region that share common features, aims, incentives or goals
What is sovereignty?
absolute and unlimited power and authority
What is federalism?
suggests that a centralised federal body exercises power, acting on behalf of the regional bloc
What are the three types of regionalism?
- economic
- security
- political
What does economic regionalism focus on?
financial and trade aspects of regional co-operation
What does security regionalism involve?
regional organisations trying to achieve peace and security through one of two methods
What are the two methods to achieve peace and security?
- interdependence and interconnectedness
- binding member states against a common enemy
What is political regionalism?
states that share the same values seek to protect them, and to enhance their standing and voice in the world
What is European integration?
the process of industrial, political, legal, economic, social and cultural integration of states in Europe
What is supranationalism?
a large amount of power given to an authority, which, in theory is placed higher than the state
What is intergovernmentalism?
interaction among states based on sovereign independence
What is globalisation?
the increasing interdependence and interconnectedness of states in the world
