- policy where states co-operate and co-ordinate strategy within a given region

- Regionalism - political process - instituational forms, state driven
- economic/political goals - Regionalisation - processes by whcih societies and economies become intergrated
- awareness of similarities

A
- focused around security or economics
- becoming increasingly multi focused
- eg. NATO, EU

Old vs new regionalism
A
- Old - state led, protectionist, focused on single areas
- New - globalisation, multipurpose, involvement of non-state actors
- Inter-religionism - relations between regions

Reasons for regionalism
A
- provide ways of managing participation in international relations
- globalisation
- trade and security
- oppportunities to cooperate conflict
BUT can be reversed, eg. Brexit
