types of RP
conservative RP - the old, clipped form of BBC english (royal family)
contemporary RP- still elite sounding, spoken in more casual settings (made in chelsea)
mainstream RP- form of accent with no discernible markers, an absence of regionalism (benedict cumberbatch, kiera knightly)
what is RP
refers to the accent, not standard, although the two are associated with one other.
used by 2% of english speakers
associated with power (overt prestige)
lance workman (accent and the perception of intelligence)
yorkshire accent is considered to be more intelligent than RP which was seen to be more intelligent that the silent condition. the silent condition and brummie accent were seen to have the same level of intelligence. no relationship between attractiveness and accent was discovered

status- testing how powerful/important the speaker appeared to be
personality- testing what traits of character come across
persuasiveness- testing how believable the person seemed

ranked status- RP, national accents, regional rural accents, regional urban accents

the speaker incorporates elements of the other’s speech into their own (accent aspects and a move more towards a more standard form of english)
