Regeneration Wednesday Flashcards

1
Q

CNS neuron damage vs PNS neuron damage

A

CNS: no macrophages, astrocytes move in, block regeneration of axon–> that sucks

PNS: macrophages clears debris, no inhibitory astrocytes, axon grows back but does not track correctly

Q

Advantages of Stem Cells

A
  • Stem cells are pluripotent so may be injected and form multiple types of cells needed for repair
  • They may be engineered to secrete needed factors for the regeneration process
  • May be monitored for progression of the repair
