Regeneration Wednesday Flashcards
1
Q
CNS neuron damage vs PNS neuron damage
A
CNS: no macrophages, astrocytes move in, block regeneration of axon–> that sucks
PNS: macrophages clears debris, no inhibitory astrocytes, axon grows back but does not track correctly
2
Q
Wallerian degeneration
A
transection of an axon (blocking axoplasmic flow)
3
Q
chromatolysis
A
- type of nerve damage
- Nissl bodies break down
4
Q
induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS cells)
A
Pluripotency is defined as the potential to differentiate into any somatic cell
less ethical
5
Q
Advantages of Stem Cells
A
- Stem cells are pluripotent so may be injected and form multiple types of cells needed for repair
- They may be engineered to secrete needed factors for the regeneration process
- May be monitored for progression of the repair
6
Q
What are the ethics involved in stem cells
A
well……there are problems…..and……ethics…..and ethical dilemmas…….screw it, just guess on the test
