What is a UDC and details?

A

Urban Development Corporation set up in the 80s to primarily regenerate inner city areas. Boards of udcs were mostly made up of people from local business community and they were encouraged to spend money on buying land and building infrastructure and to attract private investment

success and failure of udcs?

A

effective in attracting new business to run down areas. attracted over £12bn in private investment , 190k jobs nationally property led approach did little to solve social issues l, locals had little input and investments, locals tend to not benefit

City Challenge Partnerships- details?

A

cities had to compete with others for government regeneration grants, cities with best schemes got the grants. Partnerships between local authority, private sector and local community focused on social, economic and environmental issues

success and failures of city challenge partnerships?

A

bids created more successful regeneration. equal importance to buildings, people and values. Improved over 40k homes created 53k jobs and reclaimed 2k hectares of derelict land. -resourses were thinly spread over large areas, areas that had a better bid over need got the grants, money was lost preparing bids

A

established to carry out 10yr strategic programmes designed to transform the 39 most deprielved neighbourhoods and improves the lives of those there. local partnerships between residents, businesses, communities organisations and local authorities

success and failures of new deal for communities?

A

between 2002 and 2008 ndc areas saw an improvemwnt in 32 of 36 core indicators such as crime, housing and health. gaps with both national and local authority levels had generally narrowed. the ndc strategy greater positive change for place rather than people. little net change was achieved for education and worklessness

broadband centres have been set up to give access to internet and 2.5k free computers given away
