location and time zone mean business can be traded in europe and usa which is especilaly useful for finance
national government de-regulated the finance sector which means foreign banks can opperate in sydney, over 40 head offices in sydney for foreign banks
largest manufacturing hub in australia
ranked 3rd for ‘global cities’ in terms of economical output and connectivity with the world
climate change - wildfires
high costs of living, housing is particularly expensive
lack of public transport and congested roads

the rust belt

A

a geographical location in parts of the Midwest and Northeast of the USA it was the largest producer and exporter of metals and coals
due to job losses, people moved out of the area in search of new work, e.g. michigan’s population has declined by 100,000 people since 1960
the global shift led to manufacturing being cheaper abroad and manufacturing also shifted to the South of the USA
job loss led to increased poverty levels, e.g. michigan has over 1/2 its children living in poverty and a poverty rate of 41.2%

A

2014 Commonwealth games gave £740 million to Scotlands gross value added and there was much investment into local facilities e.g. public transport
the Golden-Z is a pedestrainised retail department
the Riverside corridor that has BBC Scotland, Science Museums and a conference center that hosted COP26
Residential developements that are sustainable houses for lower-income families (the Gorbals neighbourhood)
Recieved the reward for ‘global green city’ in 2020 due to its 90 substantial green spaces
uni of glasgow = uni of the year in 2024
glasgow still has a bad image e.g. ‘the glasgow effect’ (low life expectancy)
growing amount of inequality
still has higher unemployment rates than the national average

Cornwall - rural regeneration

A
  • Cornwall lacks and all-year round economy as its biggest industry is toursim and its rural countryside areas are becoming less productive
  • biggest issue is how to develop a high-income economy that will have year-round jobs to replace those lost by primary sector jobs
  • isolated from the rest of the UK
  • farm diversification e.g. a cornish pasty
  • green spaces e.g. spectacular gardens due to Cornwalls mild climate
  • outdoor persuits e.g. extreme water activities
  • Newquay local enterprize zone the Aerohub Business Park = diversifying cornwall’s economy and creating 700 jobs
