Name some criticisms of the Roman Catholic church in the 16th century?
Many believed the church was not following the the teaching of Jesus and his early disciples.
Critics said anyone could become a priest because they weren’t educated and didn’t know what they were talking about and took the job for the wealth.
The popes often behaved more like powerful kings than religious leaders.
Who where Martin Luther and John Calvin?
Martin Luther was a Catholic Monk and the professor of scripture at the university of Wittenberg. He set up his own church.
John Calvin was a French lawyer and priest who lived in Switzerland, they were both reformers.
What does excommunication mean?
The action of excluding someone from a church (banning people from a Christian church)
What was the reformation?
The reformation was from the Roman Catholic Church as a way of changing the church initiated by Martin Luther and continued by John Calvin
Explain the importance of the development of printing in relation to the Reformation.
The development of printing helped spread many ideas around the church to challenge the control of the church

The reformation changed people from believing in which craft and magic to believe in god. Translate the bible
How did many rulers in northern Europe view the Reformation?
Rulers wanted to be free of the power of the church and the power the pope had over his subjects.

What was the Counter Reformation? What did the RC Church do to try to stop the spread of Protestantism?
As the reformation spread the Roman Catholic responded with the counter reformation… they set up:
New religious orders - were founded to improve the standards of religious education and carry out missionary work.
The council of Trent - was a council of church leaders which restated catholic beliefs and removed some of the old abuses (new religious orders)
The inquisition - In catholic countries, people suspected of holding Protestant beliefs were questioned by a court of law. People were tortured and some burnt at stake if they refused to change their beliefs. In Protestant countries some catholics were prosecuted.
The result of this was that the Catholic Church remained strong in Spain, France and Italy. But the new Protestant church became strong in the uk.
