Charles believed in the divine right of kings, the idea that god had chosen him to be king. People were unhappy that he was trying to rule by himself.
1629 Charles suspended parliament and would rule by himself.(for next eleven years.
1633 Charles appointed William laud as Archbishop of Canterbury. He and Charles decided churches should be decorated again, the puritans thought that he was trying to make England Catholic again.
1634 Charles decided to make everyone living in the coast to pay ship money.
In 1634 he attempted to force everyone in the country to pay ship money. This angered members of parliament and some people refused to pay and ended up in jail.
In 1639 Charles needed money for an army to fight the Scots, so another new tax was introduced. This made people very angry.
What are some causes of the civil war?
After 1648 parliament was reduced to 60 members and in 1653 Cromwell became lord protector of the realm and England became a republic (a country without a king.)dissolving Parliament , this meant he was running England without parliament.
Charles l was executed for treason, this was the first time a king of England and been executed following a trial.
Cromwell tried to introduce Puritan values to everyday life by banning certain sports and gambling, made Christmas Day a day of fasting, closed inns and pubs and no one was allowed to work on Sundays.
Cromwell went to Ireland to seek revenge for those involved in the 1641 rebellion. He persecuted the catholics and drove many off their land.
Many didn’t agree with the death of the king, parliament became split to his death.
What didn’t change as a result of the civil war?
Many people still supported the established church and did not become Puritan.
The rich nobility in England remained and Mary still supported the claim of Charles ll to the throne of England.
