A 16th century movement which reshaped the Roman Catholic Church
5 reasons why people wanted a reformation?
- You don’t have to go to church to get your soul cleansed
- The Catholic Church is wrong to sell indulgences to get out of Purgatory.
- the Bible should be in everyone’s language not just Latin
- Popes behaved more like powerful kings than religious leaders.
- many priests did not live holy lives-they were lazy and greedy for wealth and power

What was the council of Trent?
It restarted the Catholic Church beliefs and sought to deal with abuses of position and began in 1545.
What were the new religious orders?
Jesuit was a member of the society of Jesus and the main goal of the Jesuits were to educate people around the world about Catholicism and stop the spread of Protestantism
What was the inquisition?
It was a religious court of law set up within the Catholic Church to root out and punish heresy.
It began in the 12th century.
