Why did English monarchies make plantations?
- to spread the Protestant religion across Ireland
- to ‘civilise’ Ireland by bringing in English laws
- to prevent English enemies using Ireland as a ‘back door’ into England
What was the four reasons on why the Munster plantation failed?
- undertakers failed to encourage the right sort of Tentants to Munster
- Undertakers failed to provide the tenants with weapons and a fortified bawn and that meant that they had no protection
- undertakers broke rules and allowed the Irish to rent land
- the English had angered the Irish, including O’Neil because they took their land

O’Neil fled to Europe with the aim of winning support for yet another rebellion

- landlords only offered short-term leases of land
- for many settlers their situation at home was poor
- a population problem in Scotland put pressure on people to leave the land

It changed how Ireland was run, who had the power in Ireland and would begin centuries of conflict in the Island as well as our identity, our culture and our religion still impacts us today.
