Reflex Patterns Flashcards
What is a reflex?
Involuntary movement or exercise of function in a part of the body produced in response to an excitation caused by a peripheral stimulus
What are the simplest reflex?
GSA
What is a reflex arc?
Series of anatomical parts through which the reflex impulse travels
Where are the GSE motor neuron cell bodies located?
Ventral horn of the spinal cord
Where are the preganglionic GVE cell bodies of the autonomic nervous system located?
Lateral horn of the spinal cord
Where are the GSA and GVA cell bodies located?
Dorsal horn of the spinal cord
What type of fibers are within the dorsal root of the spinal cord?
Sensory fibers entering spinal cord
What type of fibers are within the ventral root of the spinal cord?
Motor fibers leaving the spinal cord
What are the components of a complete spinal nerve?
Fused dorsal and ventral roots
What are the four types of somatic reflex arcs?
Stretch Reflex
Flexor Reflex
Crossed-extensor reflex
Crossed-Extensor/Flexor Reflex
How many neurons are involved in a stretch reflex?
2 neurons
How many neurons are involved in a flexor reflex?
3 neurons
How many neurons are involved in a crossed-extensor reflex?
3 neurons
What is the stimulus of the stretch reflex?
Stretching of skeletal muscle - external pressure
How many neurons are associated with the stretch reflex and what are they?
Two neuron
Afferent sensory neuron to efferent motor neuron
