reflection + refraction Flashcards
What is partial reflection and refraction?
Some of the light travelling from 1 medium to another is reflected and some is refracted at the boundary b/w the media.
Do both occur at once?
Both occur, but not equally.
What happens when the angle of incidence increases?
More reflection, less refraction.
What happens when the angle of refraction is 90º?
Critical angle.
What happens when the A.R is more than 90º?
Just reflection, called total internal reflection.
What are optical fibres?
Contain a glass core surrounded by cladding made of another glass with a lower index of refraction.
What do optical fibres achieve? What happens then?
Total internal reflection, allowing data to be transmitted.
How do endoscopes use optical fibre technology?
Optical fibre bundles. One carries light, the other an image.
What are prisms?
Refract light + separates white light into ROYGBIV spectrum.
