Reflection Of Waves Flashcards
What happens when a wave hits a boundary with a different material
Eg glass
- wave could be transmitted through the material
- energy of wave can be absorbed through material
- wave could be reflected off surface of material
Describe an ultra sound
Sound waves with a frequency higher than the upper limit of human hearing
Describe sound waves
- can only move through a medium
= sound waves move by particles vibrating - can’t pass through vacuum as there are no particles
- can be reflected
Describe an ultrasound
Partially reflects the boundary between two different densities
Adv of ultrasounds
Doesn’t cause mutations and no risk of cancer
How do scientists know the interior structure of the earth
Earthquakes cause seismic waves which carry energy away from earthquake
= waves pass through earth and detected by seismometers in different countries
= patterns of waves give info about interior of earth
Describe types of seismic waves
P waves
= longitudinal
= quicker
= can pass through solids and liquids
S waves
= transverse
= only pass through solids
Reason of P wave shadow zones
P waves travel faster in solids than liquids
= P waves slow down as they enter liquid outer core
= causes them to refract
