Reflec control and skeletal muscle Flashcards
what is the basic reflex arc?
Stimulus
Receptor
Sensory nerve
Relay nerve
Motor nerve
Effector
Response
what is mono/polysynaptic?
monosynaptic - one synapse
poly synaptic - more than one synapse
what is an example of mono/poly synaptic?
Mono - knee-jerk reflex
poly - pain-withdrawal reflex
if a signal is going to the spinal cord what route does it go?
Dorsal
what are examples of sensory systems and reflexes?
—Vision (vestibulo-ocular reflex)
— Somatic sensory/touch (pain withdrawal reflex
— Gustatory/taste (gustatory-salivary reflex
— olfaction/smell (smell gag reflex)
— auditory/ hearing (acoustic reflex)
— balance/movement (proprioception)
what is learned reflexes?
can be learned and improved
somatic movement
eg. riding a bike
what receptor is smooth and skeletal muscle ?
Skeletal - nicotinic
Smooth - muscarinic
does diet improve reflexes?
Diet alone does not improve reflexes
- a healthy diet will help improve reflexes as this is required to maintain an exercise regime
what does autonomic neuropathy involve?
damage to the nerves that carry information from the brain and spinal cord
What is obesity closely linked with?
metabolic syndrome ( increased risk of heart disease, stroke etc.)
