A

referendums are different to elections because in an election you vote for someone to represent you (representative democracy)

Describe reasons for calling a referendum

A
  • public pressure - as seen with the SNP in Scotland with the independence referendum of 2014 & Conservatives worried that they would lose voters to UKIP so Brexit in 2016
  • resolve controversial issues in a party - like the Conservatives with Brexiteers & Remainers
  • agreement between parties - 2022 vote on whether to replace FPTP with AV
