Anatomical position
standing in an upright posture, facing straight ahead, feet parallel and close, with palms facing forward
Supine position
- facing upward position of the body; lying in the back
Prone position
Face downward position of the body; lying on the stomach
Anterior
in the front or in the front part
posterior
behind, in the back, or in the rear
Contralateral
opposite side of the body
Ipsilateral
same side of the body
Bilateral
left and right side of the body
Inferior
below in relation to another structure, caudal
Superior
above in relation to another structure; higher, cephalic
Deep
beneath/ below the surface; used to describe relative depth or location of muscles or tissues
superficial
near the surface, used to describe relative depth or location of muscle or tissue
Distal
situated away from the center or midline of the body , away from the point of origin
proximal
nearest the trunk of the point of origin
lateral
on or to the side ; outside farther from the median or midsagittal plane
medial
relating to the middle or center; nearer to the medial or midsagittal plane
plantar
relating to the sole or undersurface of the foot
palmar
relating to the palm or volar aspect of the hand
fibular
Relating to fibular (lateral) side of knee, leg, ankle, foot
-also referred to as peroneal
tibial
medial side of knee, leg, ankle, or foot
Radial
lateral side of the forearm or hand
valgua
outward angulation of distal segment of a bone or joint, as in knock knees
Ulnar
medial side of the forearm or hand
Varus
inward angulation of distal segment of a bone or joint, knows as bowlegs
