reductionalism/holism Flashcards
what is holism?
Investigating multiple factors at lots of different levels which all interact
what is reductionalism
Investigates the most basic underlying reasons behind human behaviour
How is lotus and Palmers study reductionist?
1) Critical question- they were focused on the speed estimation made by the participant (based on the verb in the critical question)
2) Critical question- they were focused on the false memories given by the participant (based on verb used in critical question)
Two benefits of lotus and palmers study being reductionist
- You can identify the effect of the critical question on the DV (establish cause and effect)
-You can use this as a starting point for further reach on other factors into eyewitness testimony
Two drawbacks of Lotfus and palmers study being reductionists?
- The procedure lacked ecological validity as in a lab environment to test the effect of the IV.
- It is hard to reduce memory down to a single-factor explanation
How is Pilliavins Study Hollistics
Social influence
-presence of others
-presence of a model
-state of victims
Cognition
-Arousal cost reward analysis
Biology
-gender
-race
A weakness of hollism
It can be difficult for researchers to pin down which, out of many, different factors is having the greatest effect
A strength of hollism
-Taking a holistic approach can lead to explanations of behaviour that are high in face validity as all factors are considered
A weakness of reductionism
Human behaviour is often to complex to be reduced down to single-factor explanation
A strength of reductionism
Studies which take a reductionist approach make it possible to draw more valid conclusions about cause and effect because they tend to be highly controlled
