Redox Rxns Flashcards

1
Q

What are the rules to assigning oxidation #’s ?

A
  1. Free elements: 0
  2. Ions: their charge
  3. Group IA: +1
  4. Group IIA: +2
  5. Group VIIA: -1 (unless coupled w/ more electroneg. atom)
  6. H: +1 (unless w/ less electroneg. atom)
  7. O: -2 (except for peroxides & more electroneg)
  8. Sum should be 0, or change of polyatomic ion
