Acids & Bases Flashcards
What is the difference between an arrhenius acid & base ?
AA dissociate to form an excess of H+ ions, & AB dissociate to form an excess of OH- ions
*Acids contain H @beginning of their formula, bases contain OH @ the end
What is the relationship between a Bronsted-Lowry acid &. base ?
BLA donates H+, while BLB is a H+ acceptor
What is the relationship between lewis acids & bases ?
LA is an e- acceptor, LB is an e- donor
The ability of an amphoteric species to react with itself is known as ?
Autoionization
The reverse reaction of neutralization, where salt & water react to form an acid & base, is known as?
Hydrolysis
What is the general principle of titrations ?
Titrant (solution of known conc.) is added to Titrand (solution of unknown conc.) until completion of reaction is reach @ equivalence point
The center of the buffer region is termed the ?
Half-equivalence point
*Half of a given species has been protonated or deprotonated
What does a buffer solution consist of ?
A weak acid + conjugate base + cation
OR
A weak base + conjugate acid + anion
What is the buffer system in the plasma component of blood ?
Bicarbonate buffer system
