Redox reactions Flashcards
1
Q
What happens during neutralisation?
A
- Water is produces
- Acid and base is present in reactant’s side
2
Q
Oxidation properties
A
- Diatomic molecules individually oxidation number is always zero
- Metals individually oxidation number is zero
- Oxygen’s oxidation number is always -2
- Cofficients are not counted (the front number)
3
Q
Oxidation
A
1) Oxygen is added to an element or a compound
2) An element, ion or compound loses electrons
3) The oxidation state of an element is increased
- Oxidation is loss of electron
4
Q
Reduction
A
1) Oxygen is removed from an element or a compound
2) An element, ion or compound gains electrons
3) The oxidation state of an element is decreased
- Gain of electron
5
Q
Agents
A
- The species that has undergone oxidation is called reducing agent
- The species that has undergone reduction is called oxidation agent
