Redox reactions Flashcards
One species undergoes simultanious oxidation and reduction?
Disproportionation
Oxidation and reduction occur to give the same species
conproportionation
What are the preconditions of redox in aqueous solution?
- reactants and products must be known
- separated oxidation and reduction reactions must be formulated
What are the 5 steps to balance a redox reaction in aqueous solution
- Determine oxidation states of redox couples
- calculation of involved electrons
- Balance the charge with H+ or OH- ions
- Balance with water
- calculation of lowest common multiple of involved electrons and combine both redox reactions
What do we balance the charge with in an oxidic melth?
O2-
What are typical oxide donors in an oxidic melt?
CO3 2-
What is left over O 2- used for ?
reacts with Quartz (SiO2) to form SiO3
Are single or double bonds favoured for lighter atoms?
double bonds
What is an oxidant?
oxidizing agent: causes oxidation: IS REDUCED
What is a reductant?
reducing agent: causes reduction: IS OXIDIZED
If standard electrode potential is more negative?
it is more likely to be oxidized
If standard electrode potential is more positive?
it is more likely to be reduced
