REDOX Flashcards
Define the oxidation number of an element
A measure of the number of electrons that an atom uses to bond with atoms of another element
What is the oxidation numbers in a neutral compound?:
0
What is the oxidation number of oxygen in compounds?
-2 (except in peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide, is -1)
What is the oxidation number of hydrogen in compounds?
-1 (except in hydrides such as LiH, is -1)
What is the oxidation of (in a compound):
- Group 1 element
- Group 2 element
- Group 3 element
- Group 7 element
- Group 1 = +1
- Group 2 = +2
- Group 3 = +3
- Group 7 = -1
Define a redox reaction
A reaction where both oxidation and reduction take place
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons/an increase in oxidation number
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons/a decrease in oxidation number
What is an oxidising agent?
A reagent that oxidises (takes electrons from) another species
What is a reducing agent?
A reagent that reduces (adds electrons to) another species
