Redox 182-183 Flashcards
1
Q
Define oxidation
A
Oxidation is loss of electrons, or an increase in oxidation number.
2
Q
Define reduction.
A
Reduction is gain of electrons, or a decrease in oxidation number.
3
Q
If reduction occurs in a reaction, what else occurs?
A
oxidation
4
Q
Briefly explain how to calculate a redox equation knowing to half-equations.
A
- Multiply both reactions by factors so that they both have the same number of electrons. Then add the two equations together. The electrons should then cancel out.
5
Q
What can be added to redox reaction equations if everything does not completely balance?
A
- If the reaction has been carried out in acid conditions, then simply add the number of H+ ions that you need.
- For alkaline conditions, you can add OH-
- If ‘H’ and ‘O’ need to be added, think ‘H2O’
