Rate of reaction 112-113 Flashcards
Define rate of reaction.
Rate of reaction is the change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time.
How is the rate of a reaction calculated and what are its units?
rate = (change in concentration of reactant or product)/(time for the change to take place) Units of rate = mol dm-3s-1
The rate of a reaction can be determined by measuring the concentration of a reactant, or product, at time intervals during the course of a reaction. The experimental results are processed and a graph is plotted of concentration against time.
At any instant in time, how can you calculate the rate?
At any instant of time, the rate is equal to the slope of the curve.
Draw concetration of reactant vs time for a reaction.
Define initial rate of reaction.
Initial rate of reaction is the change in concentration of a reactant, or product, per unit time at the start of the reaction when t = 0.
Draw concentration of product vs time graph for a reaction.
