REDOX Flashcards
What is the definition of an Oxidation Number?
The charge that would exist on an individual atom if the bonding were completely ionic
How do you determine which element has the positive Oxidation value?
the more electronegative species will have the negative value
electronegativity increases across a period and decreases down a group
O is further to the right than C in the periodic table so it has the negative value
How do you determine the value of an element’s oxidation state?
from its position in the periodic table and/or
the other element(s) present in the formula
Definition of Oxidising Agent?
An oxidising agent is a substance that oxidises another atom or ion by causing it to lose electrons
Definition of Reducing Agent?
A reducing agent is a substance that reduces another atom or ion by causing it to gain electrons
What does Reduction do to the Oxidation number
When a substance is reduced the Oxidation number decreases
Reactivity Series of Metals
K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu, Ag, Au, Pt
The role of the Oxidising Species?
To accept electrons from another species
Which Oxygen Compounds do not have an Oxidation number of -2?
-1
