What is redemption?
The christian belief that Jesus made up for Adam and Eve’s sins and brought humans back into relationship with God
What is the fall?
When Adam and Eve changed from obedience to disobedience to God by eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden
What is Original Sin?
Catholic teaching that the fall caused all people to be born with a tendency to commit sin
Why did God give humans free will?
Because he wants humans to choose to follow him rather than be forced too
Why does Sin exist?
In order for God to give all humans free will, it means some will miss-use this free will too commit sin
What does it mean to atone?
To make up for wrongdoing
What are the 4 steps that Christians believe Jesus redeemed humans through?
- Death
- Burial
- Resurrection
- Ascension
What did Jesus’ death tell/show us?
- Jesus showed obedience and love to God the Father
- Jesus restored relationship between humans and God
- Jesus restored cosmic order (harmony between all of nature and the universe)
What did Jesus’ burial tell/show us?
- Jesus “descended into hell” and freed those who had died before him.
- Jesus promised that his people will follow where he has gone, so this proved that God is with people even in death.
What did Jesus’ resurrection tell/show us?
- Jesus is victorious over sin, suffering and death
- Life after death is now possible
- It is the most important event in christianity
What did Jesus’ ascension tell/show us?
- Before being lifted to heaven, Jesus promised to send the holy spirit to complete his work
- Jesus instructed his disciples to be his witnesses and tell everyone about him
- The ascension shows Jesus is with the father, and christians will also be raised to heaven
- He told the disciples he would return at the end of time
What are the 3 things that Jesus is?
- Example
- Restorer
- Victor
Why is Jesus the example?
He sets an example through his obedience to the father
Why is Jesus the restorer?
Jesus restored the relationship between with God and Humans, and also restored cosmic order
Why is Jesus the victor?
As he was victorious over suffering, sin and death
Why is Pentecost known as the “birthday of the church”?
Because the coming of the holy spirit (pentecost) is believed to be the birth of christianity as it is when the apostles began their mission to spread the good news.
What is salvation?
Being saved from sin and therefore going to heaven
How did Jesus make salvation possible?
As he redeemed all humans by dying on the cross
How is salvation shown in the past?
Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection and ascension made it possible for people to enter heaven.
How is salvation shown in the present?
- We choose wether to accept or reject salvation by following Jesus’ teachings
- The holy spirit also guides us towards salvation (heaven)
How is salvation shown in the future?
Salvation will be completed at the end of time when sin and death are completely destroyed
Who are the 2 philosophers who help us understand redemption through metaphors?
- St Irenaeus
- St Anselm
What is St Irenaeus’ metaphor to explain redemption and what does it mean
“The tree of the cross”
- The tree with the apple on it created the need for salvation when Adam and Eve broke humans relationship with God.
- Jesus dying on the cross brought salvation for humans and restored the relationship between humans and God.
What is St Anselms’ metaphor to describe redemption and what does it mean?
“Jesus paid a ransom for the sin of all humans”
- After the fall, humans became slaves to the sin.
- Jesus paid a ransom (with his life) to free the humans from sin.
What is conscience?
The voice of God in peoples hearts, guiding them to make the right choices.
What do christians believe the feeling of guilt is?
Christians believe that the feeling of guilt is your conscience stopping you from doing it next time.
What are the 2 sides of conscience?
- Natural instincts
- Educated
Why is mass the “source and summit” for christian life?
- It is the “source” as it is the beginning of christian life
- It is the “summit” as it is the aim for christian life
What are the 4 ways in which catholics believe christ is present in a catholic mass?
1) The consecrated bread and wine
2) Gods word (bible readings)
3) The priest (acts in persona christi)
4) The worshipers (the church)
What is the bible quote from about Jesus being present in the church?
“When two or three are gathered in my name, I am among them”
What happens during the eucharistic prayer in the mass?
Transubstantiation happens (the bread and wine become the body and blood of christ)
How do orthodox christians understand the eucharist?
- The eucharist is so holy it happens behind an iconostasis (a decorated wall)
- Christ is truly present in the bread and wine
How does the church of England understand the eucharist?
- The bread and wine represents the body and blood (but is not truly changing)
- Christ is present in the community that shares the eucharist
How do noncomformist christians understand the eucharist (Baptists, methodists etc)
- Do not have any bread or wine
- The purpose of the eucharist is to remember the last supper and not to re-enact it
How do the quakers understand the eucharist?
They do not celebrate any form of eucharist
What is the eucharistic adoration?
A short service in the catholic church in which the consecrated bread is adored and praised
What are 3 ways in which a catholic church inspires worship?
- Statues of Saints encourage people to follow their example
- It is a place for the community to worship
- The care taken in the decoration shows respect for God
What are 3 differences between pre and post 1965 churches?
- Pre-1965 churches had mass only said in Latin, whereas post 1965 churches say mass in any language.
- Pre-1965 churches always had the altar on the east wall, whereas post 1965 churches have the altar in the middle of the church.
- Pre-1965 churches are built in the shape of a cross, whereas post 1965 churches are in a circular shape

A model of a cross with Jesus on it

A table where the bread and wine are consecrated and offered to God

A cupboard/box where the consecrated bread is kept
