Red Book Flashcards
Does the pilot need to fly the entire approach procedure to log it for currency?
Yes, unless being vectored by ATC onto the final approach course or cleared in some other way to take a “shortcut” by ATC (FAA inFO 15012)
What basic preflights should be made involving GPS before an IFR flight?
Verify databases
Review GPS and WAAS NOTAMS
Confirm GPS manual is onboard
(FAA-H09093-15)
What is RAIM?
Receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) is the ability for a TSO-129 GPS to ensure that adequate GPS signals are being received at all times
Do we need to do a RAIM check before our flight?
No, we have a TSO-146 certified GPS, so as long as we have WAAS coverage throughout the entire route of the flight, RAIM checks are unnecessary (AIM 5-1-16)
How often must GPS databases be updated?
Navigation databased every 28 days. Obstacle databases may be updated every 56 days and terrain and airport databases are updated as needed (FAA-H-8083-15)
Can I, as a private pilot, update a GPS database?
Yes, as long as it is done without disassembling the avionics and without tools (43.3)
Do we need a VOR receiver onboard if we plan to fly only GPS approaches?
No, we have a WAAS equipped TSO-146 GPS so no other navigational equipment is required (1-1-17)
How would you go about determining weather conditions at a planned ETA without a TAF? page 1-21
How should you mitigate risk while deciding whether to take off in low IMC?
Check personal minimums
Check for obstacles
Check for takeoff minimums
Look for an ODP
See if the weather is good enough for you to utilize an approach back to the airport if needed (5-2-9)
What are the two types of DP’s
ODPs- published if obstacles penetrate the Obstacle clearance surface (OCS) (Fig 5-2-1)
SIDs- Graphically published and assigned by ATC, meant to reduce controller workload (5-2-9)
What are the two types of SIDs
Pillot navigation- pilot follows the chart, minimal radio communication required
Radar vector- pilot relies on ATC radar vectors
How should you descend when given a descent clearance to a lower altitude
Promptly at the optimum rate for your aircraft until 1000 ft away, then between 500 and 1500 fpm(4-4-10-d)
Where can you locate VOT test facilities
Chart supplement (1-1-4)
Why would a pilot want to fly VFR on top?
More favorable wind, turbulence
Where can you not get a VFR on top clearance?
Class A airspace
