Human resource management is the process of acquiring, training, appraising and compensating employees, as well as the process of attending to their labour relations, health safety and fairness concerns. It helps to utilise individuals in order to achieve organisational objectives.

A

Recruitment is the process of attracting individuals on a timely basis, in sufficient numbers, with appropriate qualifications, and encouraging them to apply for jobs.

A

What are some alternatives to recruitment?

A
  1. Promotion from within - positions are filled with current employees
  2. Onshoring/offshoring - involves moving jobs not to other countries but to lower cost cities. The government may need onshore handling of particular data, such as financial, health and defense data.
  3. Overtime - used to meet short term fluctuations in work volume. Avoids the costs of recruitment, selection and training and allows existing employees to benefit from increased income

A

Internal recruitment involves recruiting from the inside of the company - it may be through promotion of existing employees, going through human resource databases or the internal intranet within the company.

What are some advantages of internal recruitment?

A
  • vacancies are organised within the organisation
  • keeps recruitment costs down
  • existing staff already have knowledge of the business, its activities and how it operates
  • employees are already within the organisation and can therefore be trusted
  • provides motivation for staff (to get promotions)
  • places value on current staff (over external candidates)
