Recovery Flashcards
When should you extubate an animal?
occurs when patient is breathing & regains swallow reflex
When is pulse ox most helpful?
Recovery; less useful with anesthesia
Why are brachycephalic breeds different than other breeds?
have increased vagal tone and BOAS
What are methods of supportive O2 therapy?
Mask, nasal canula, oxygen cage, CPAP helmet
Why is temperature not maintained during anesthesia?
o inhibiting thermoreg. centers
o Core temp redistributed to shell & lost in environment
o disabled thermoregulatory response of vasoconstriction
What are the 5 major routes of heat loss?
radiation ( most lost), convection, evaporation & respiration
Hypothermia causes?
o Arrhythmias
o Reduced plt function- slows coagulation
o Reduce P50: increases Hg affinity for O2 causing decreased peripheral oxygenation
o Prolonged recovery
o Increased risk of infection
o Shivering increases VO2 X300 fold–> may be relevant with concurrent DZ
What spp. is prone to hyperthermia from opioids?
cats
How can pt get burns & when do they appear?
high temperatures on reduced surface area
o Vasoconstriction reduced heat source exchange with heat source resulting in burns
o Burns appear 1-7 days after exposure
How frequently should you pain score an animal with acute pain?
q 30 min-1 hr initially, then 4 hr; then 8 hr
Where would dysphoria/ emergent delirium occur?
high dose opioids (dysphoria), older animal (emergent delirium) and predisposed breeds ( retriver & norther breeds)
How do you improve dysphoria/ emergent delirium?
naloxone or butorphanol
