Anesthetic accidents, complications & emergency Flashcards
How do you minimize risk?
standardization- establish a protocol while still acknowledging the pt is different!
How do you confirm ET placement?
visualization, capnography, thoracic auscultation (both sides- if only heard on one side tube may be too deep)
What does hyperventilation signify in an anesthetized patient?
pt is light (or painful) or hypoxemic (common in horse, PaO2 drops so reflex hyperventilation)
What patients should you avoid anesthesia if possible?
Pulmonary DZ
How do you know if a patient developed pulmonary edema secondary to fluid overload?
observe hypertension & difficulty oxygenating!
Hypotension TX
fluid bolus (caution with cardiac pt.), vasopressor+/- inotrope & transfusions
How do you differentiate the anesthetic plan for patient with tachycardia and central pupil position?
Blood pressure!
What stage would be considered severe anesthetic overdose?
Stage 4
You see a sinus arrhythmia, how do you treat it?
You don’t
How do you treat V-tach
Lidocaine
How do you treat A-fib
you will see irregularly irregular beats
treat with calcium channel blocker if tachycardia
What arrest rhythms are shockable?
pulse less V-tach & Ventricular fibrillation
What drugs to use with CPR
Atropine & epinephrine
How do you know you are giving effective chest compressions with capnography?
> 10 mmHg
