Preanesthetic assessment Flashcards
General anesthesia causes…
unconsciousness, amnesia, muscle relaxation, CV, respiratory depression, impaired thermoregulation, impaired sympathetic auto-regulation & decreased organ perfusion/function.
General anesthesia risk
hypotension, hypoventilation, hypothermia, bradycardia & pain
What would you ASA classification for a patient with mild systemic disease?
category II
Neonate limitations
require glucose supplementation, blood pressure depends on heart rate, reduced sympathetic response, reduced haptic & renal metabolism & prone to hypothermia
Geriatric limitation
often need analgesia for arthritis, often have pre-existing condition, reduced response to beta-agonist & prone to hypothermia
ASA classification: patient with severe disease not regulated
Category III
ASA classification: patient with severe systemic disease (life threatening)
Category IV
ASA classification: moribund patient- not expected to survive without operation
Category V
How long should animals be fasted?
- Dog/ Cat
- Small ruminant
- Horses
- Neonates/Pocket pets
