Recording music/studios (found.dig.med) Flashcards
Home project studios
Home project studios are somewhere between a big recording studio and just a laptop. These studios usually have:
Audio interface
Speakers
Headphones
Computer
Microphone
DAW
Mic stand
Mic preamp
Mixing console
MIDI instrument
Monitoring and overdubbing
Monitoring and overdubbing=
Give someone a reference point for rhythm and pitch (eg. Backing track, metronome, temp track) that they can hear through headphones.
This prevents issues with samples/overdubbing etc.
Recording voice and instrument
Rec with 2 mics at the same time can give a more natural performance.
An advantage of rec both voice and instrument at once is that they will be in sync.
A disadvantage is that it will need more takes.
Rec them separately means more flexibility.
Rec both at once also makes editing harder.
Miking in mono vs. stereo
Mono = pick up with one sound
Stereo = pick up with two. (Stereo mics should be placed in a polar pattern – enabling them to position every element of the sound in a stereo image).
Big project studios/professional
May have lots of wires and space
The operation of a studio like this: lots of microphones can capture multiple channels as instruments are played.
This is sent through to a control room which is to the side, and ideally there’d be some form of monitoring so people can hear.
