Basics (foun.dig.med) Flashcards
What is a channel EQ + what is it for?
Channel EQ is an audio effect. In most mixing situations, it’s used as the first effect on a channel strip, allowing you to shape the sound of individual channel strip signals, or for tone-shaping on an overall project mix, before applying other effects.
What is a limiter?
A limiter catches the loudest peaks of an audio source and applies brick wall compression that prevents it from exceeding the clipping point of 0 dBFS. S. They’re used to increase perceived loudness by increasing the quietest parts of an audio signal while preventing the peaks from clipping.
What is a compressor?
Compressor = automated volume control. Compression is a music production tool used to control the dynamic range of a sound: to decrease the difference in volume between its loudest and softest parts. This can be done by making the loudest parts quieter (downward compression) or the quietest sounds louder (upward compression).
What is delay?
Elongates sound for creative effect. Drags it out. Plays back delayed duplicates, creates echoes.
What is a pitch shifter?
A pitch shifter = a sound effects unit that raises or lowers the pitch of an audio signal by a preset interval. Doubling something and changing pitch, without affecting its duration.
What is convolution reverb?
An effects plugin that uses a recording of a physical space to generate frequency specific reverb. It takes an input signal (the sound to be reverberated) and processes it with the sound of an actual or virtual acoustic space to create the illusion that the input was recorded in that space.
