What is disability glare? What’s it caused by?
Reduction in visual performance due to glare from direct or reflected light
Caused by intraocular scattered light. e.g. from cataracts
What is discomfort glare? What’s it caused by?
Visual discomfort/annoyance caused by glare from screens
What can be done to reduce disability glare?
MAR coating or filters for night driving
What does the extent of discomfort glare depend on?
Size of screen
Number of glare sources
Luminance of background
Luminance of glare source
Angle of glare source
Px’s age
How can VDU glare be minimised?
First check w/ px that workspace has been checked for DSE requirements
Adjust monitor height/angle
Close curtains/blinds
Any light sources should be pointed at task, not into eyes

Poss glare filter over screen
Advise 20/20/20 rule
What is reflection glare? What’s it caused by?
Shiny surfaces reflecting polarised light, causing excessive luminance
e.g. water, VDU, car windscreens
How can reflection glare be reduced?
Polarised sunglasses
