reconstructive memory ROCP Flashcards
what is reconstructive memory?
a theory that suggests that memory is an active process that involves the reconstruction of information
memory is based on: information obtained during the perception of the event and external post-event information
STUDY ON RECONSTRUCTIVE MEMORY
Loftus & Palmer 1974
aim: to see if leading questions can change eye witness memory of an event
- 45 students
- clip of crash, bumped, collided, contacted, smashed
- stronger verbs higher speed estimates
- schemas activated with the intensity of the verb
- the information we hear after an event can distort how we remember it.
STUDY ON RECONSTRUCTIVE MEM mall
Loftus & Pickrell 1995
aim: to see if false memories of an event that never happened could be implanted using misinformation
- 24 participants
- “memory tests” - lost in the mall
- 21% recalled, some in great detail
- false memories can be implanted through misinformation
ethical considerations in studies
-was not a fully informed consent because participants could not know the aim
- the researchers needed a mildly traumatic memory to ensure validity, but this unfortunately required deception.
